Discover the magic of premium growing media with a Jiffy PRO7 COCO BLOCK. This 5kg block of compressed, dehydrated coco coir, which expands to 70 litres in volume when rehydrated, is the gardener’s secret weapon. It’s a convenient way to add coco coir to your store of gardening and plant propagation materials and take things to the next level. Compact and easy to handle, and 100% organic, it has many uses, primarily in hydroponic growing, but also in soil-based gardening.

So, what is coco coir, exactly?

Coco coir is the fibrous coating that surrounds the hard shell of coconuts, contained within the protective outer husk. It is a useful by-product, and the tough fibres within it have traditionally been used to make ropes and matting. It has a mixed texture of long fibres and particles of pith, which for growing purposes is great – the fibres give an airy, free draining structure, while the pith is more water retentive. And the open structure is perfect for root development.

Coco Coir is often referred to as “coco peat” because the pith looks and feels like peat. But don’t be mistaken – coco coir is in fact very different from peat. Peat (sometimes known as Moss Peat) is the partially decayed remains of plants, accumulated over many years, extracted from wetlands and marshy areas. Peat has been naturally composted, contains many plant nutrients, and unless treated, is rather acidic.

Coco coir is pH neutral (neither acidic nor alkaline) and contains almost no plant nutrients at all. But that is a great advantage – it allows the grower to add precisely the nutrients that the plants require, with no danger of imbalance.

What are the benefits of using Jiffy PRO7 COCO BLOCK?

  • Easy and discreet to transport and store, the block expands to 70L of coco coir when rehydrated.
  • Excellent aeration and water retention, an ideal medium for root development and all stages of plant growth.
  • Suitable for most plant species.
  • Ideal for propagation from seeds or cuttings, and an ideal potting substrate for young or established plants.
  • Can be added to homemade compost for aeration and a more open structure.
  • Can be used as a conditioner for heavy garden soils.
  • With a neutral pH and a very low EC, it’s ideal for hydroponic growing.

To Rehydrate

Begin by placing your unwrapped Jiffy PRO7 COCO BLOCK in a wide, shallow, waterproof container such as a large garden tray or a watertight wheelbarrow.

For a mix that remains slightly less than fully saturated—perfect if you will water your plants immediately after potting—you will need 30L of lukewarm water (warm water acts faster, but cold water works OK). Opt for 35 litres if you plan not to water your plants right away. Be mindful of the water quality in your region. You may need to adjust the pH if the water is very hard.

Also remember that Coco Coir contains no nutrients. Your plants will do better if you add a little feed to the water that you use to rehydrate the block. ROOT!T First Feed, PLANT!T Coco Tomato Feed, PLANT!T Coco Chilli or Pepper Feed are all excellent. Always follow the directions on the bottle label.

Add the water to the block and watch it expand. Break it up as it swells and fluff it up to produce a uniform product with your hands or a hand fork. This can take 15 to 20 mins.

How to use

First you may wish to add other substrates to the coco coir, such as perlite or clay pebbles. Also you could add organic compost as a background nutrient, if preferred. Mix well to ensure an even distribution.

Transfer the finished mix into appropriate pots and plant your young plants. Those using Jiffy7C Plugs or ROOT!T Peat Free Dry Plugs will find their plants particularly well-equipped to flourish in the premium PRO7 Coco Coir substrate.

As your plants develop and thrive, continue to feed them using your chosen nutrient, always taking care to check the pH, and follow the directions on the bottle.

Jiffy PRO7 COCO BLOCK is a good choice for growers using a lot of coco coir at one time, who prefer a product easier and more discreet to transport and store than loose-bagged products. However, not everyone wants to use 70L of substrate all at once, and we recommend that customers also consider using Jiffy PRO7 COCO BRICK which yields just 8L when rehydrated and comes in a box of 24 bricks.
